About RF Exposure Compliance

All amateur radio operators are required to evaluate their stations for compliance with FCC RF exposure guidelines (OET Bulletin 65). This calculator helps you determine if your station meets the Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) limits.

Key Concepts

  • MPE (Maximum Permissible Exposure): The FCC limit for RF exposure, measured in mW/cm²
  • Controlled Environment: Areas where people are aware of RF exposure and can exercise control
  • Uncontrolled Environment: Areas accessible to the general public with no awareness of RF exposure
  • Duty Cycle: The percentage of time the transmitter is actually producing RF during transmission

When to Perform an Evaluation

You should evaluate your station when:

  • Installing a new antenna system
  • Increasing transmitter power
  • Changing antenna type or location
  • Moving to a new location
  • Neighbors or others express concern
